In our multi-cultural world, it is more important than ever to be inclusive of all religions and ceremonies. Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do at Doctor A Cosmetics, and this is why we want to help you understand more about Raksha Bandhan and what it means.

 What is Raksha Bandhan?

Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi, is a Hindu festival that celebrates the bond between a brother and his sister and their love. It is celebrated on the full moon usually in the months of July or August depending on the lunar calendar. So, what does Raksha Bandhan mean? Raksha Bandhan is made up of two Hindi words. Raksha which means ‘protection’ and bandhan which means ‘to tie’.  Hence the bond of protection. Young girls and women tie a rakhi (a thread bracelet made of interwoven threads of colour, usually adorned with beads) on the right wrists of their brothers, wishing them protection from evil influences of various kinds.

Raksha Bandhan celebrates the bond between a sister and her brother. It is usually celebrated between siblings however non-siblings can do it too. When a woman ties a rakhi around a man who is not her blood related brother, he is considered by the tying of the rakhi on his wrist to henceforth be her brother.

A rakhi symbolizes a brother’s vow to protect his sister.

How is Raksha Bandhan Celebrated?

When a rakhi is tied, a prayer is offered asking for happiness and prosperity for both the sister and the brother. A mantra can also be chanted in Sanskrit or Punjabi when placing the rakhi. To celebrate the occasion at the end of the ceremony the sister and brother place a sweet in their mouth. The brother then offers a gift to his sister.
